The attraction is designed to look like an old Hollywood hotel, the Hollywood Tower Hotel, which was struck by lightning in 1939, causing five hotel guests to mysteriously vanish in the hotel's elevator. The ride takes guests through the hotel's eerie lobby and into an old freight elevator that suddenly drops and rises unexpectedly, giving riders the sensation of free-falling. The ride is known for its dramatic special effects, including lightning, sound effects, and ghostly apparitions.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror has been a popular attraction since it first opened at Disney's Hollywood Studios in 1994.
