The SMU football program began in 1915 and has produced a number of successful teams and players over the years. The team has won conference championships and has made appearances in several bowl games, including the Cotton Bowl, the Hawaii Bowl, and the Boca Raton Bowl. Notable SMU football alumni include Doak Walker, who won the Heisman Trophy in 1948, and Eric Dickerson, who is considered one of the greatest running backs in NFL history.
In recent years, the SMU football program has seen a resurgence in success under head coach Sonny Dykes. The team has had several strong seasons and has been ranked in the top 25 nationally. The program has also undergone significant renovations to its facilities, including the construction of a new indoor practice facility and the renovation of the team's stadium, Gerald J.
