Fraternity and sorority rush, also known as recruitment or rush week, is a process by which college students interested in joining a fraternity or sorority participate in a series of events and activities to learn about the different organizations and ultimately decide which one they want to join. Rush is typically held at the beginning of the academic year or semester.

During rush, fraternities and sororities organize various events and gatherings to showcase their values, activities, and membership. These events provide prospective members with opportunities to meet current members, ask questions, and get a sense of the organization's culture. Activities during rush may include informational sessions, meet and greets, social events, community service projects, and interviews.

The purpose of rush is to allow both prospective members and the fraternity or sorority to assess their compatibility and determine if there is a good fit. It gives potential members a chance to explore different organizations, learn about their traditions, philanthropic efforts, social activities, and academic support. Conversely, fraternities and sororities use this period to evaluate potential members based on their interests, values, and potential contributions to the organization.

After the rush period, fraternities and sororities extend invitations to prospective members, known as bids. Prospective members can then choose to accept or decline the offers they receive. If they accept a bid, they become initiated members of the fraternity or sorority and begin the process of joining the organization.

It's important to note that rush processes may vary among colleges and universities and can differ between fraternities and sororities. Some schools may have a structured and formalized process, while others may have a more informal approach. It is recommended that interested students consult their respective college or university's Greek Life office or the individual fraternity/sorority chapters for specific details on rush at their institution.
