The San Diego Padres are a professional baseball team based in San Diego, California. The team was founded in 1969 as an expansion team and has since played in the National League of Major League Baseball (MLB).
The Padres have had several periods of success throughout their history, including their first trip to the World Series in 1984, where they lost to the Detroit Tigers. In 1998, the team won their first National League pennant, but lost to the New York Yankees in the World Series. The Padres have also won five National League West division titles in their history.
The team's home ballpark is Petco Park, which opened in 2004 and has become known for its distinctive design and features, such as a beach area beyond the outfield wall and a giant sculpture of a marine landing on the field.
Some notable players who have played for the Padres over the years include Tony Gwynn, Trevor Hoffman, and Dave Winfield.
