The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, often abbreviated as TMNT or simply Ninja Turtles, are a fictional team of four anthropomorphic turtles named after Renaissance artists and trained in the art of ninjutsu. The characters were created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird and first appeared in Mirage Studios' comic book series "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" in 1984.

The four turtles are named after Italian Renaissance artists: Leonardo (blue bandana), Michelangelo (orange bandana), Donatello (purple bandana), and Raphael (red bandana). They are often depicted wearing colored masks and using weapons, such as katanas, nunchucks, bo staffs, and sais.

The turtles live in the sewers of New York City and are mentored by a rat named Splinter, who also trained them in the art of ninjutsu. They often team up with their human friend April O'Neil and battle their arch-nemesis, the evil Shredder, and his foot soldiers.

The popularity of the Ninja Turtles has spawned a franchise that includes numerous comic book series, animated TV shows, movies, video games, and merchandise. The characters have become iconic and continue to be beloved by fans of all ages.
