The Monterey Bay Bridge is a highway bridge that spans the Monterey Bay in California, USA. The bridge connects the cities of Monterey and Santa Cruz, and is officially named the Charles J. McClure Memorial Bridge, in honor of a California state senator who played a key role in securing funding for the project.
The bridge was completed in 1968 and is a cable-stayed bridge, which means that its main cables are attached directly to the towers, instead of being suspended from above like a suspension bridge. The bridge is 1.2 miles (1.9 km) long and has a total of five lanes, with three lanes in one direction and two lanes in the other.
The Monterey Bay Bridge provides a scenic and convenient route for drivers traveling between Monterey and Santa Cruz, and is a popular landmark in the area. The bridge also provides views of the beautiful Monterey Bay, which is home to a diverse array of marine life, including sea otters, whales, and sea lions.
