The giraffe is a long-necked mammal that is native to Africa. It is the tallest living animal on earth, with adult males reaching heights of up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) and females reaching heights of up to 14 feet (4.3 meters). Giraffes have distinctive spotted coats and long necks that enable them to reach high branches in trees to feed.
Giraffes are herbivores, primarily feeding on leaves, buds, and fruits of trees and shrubs. Their long necks and legs also allow them to run at high speeds, with the ability to reach speeds of up to 35 miles (56 kilometers) per hour.
Giraffes are social animals that typically live in herds, although the composition of these herds can vary. Males establish a hierarchy through a process known as "necking," where they use their long necks to swing their heads and necks at each other in combat.
While giraffes were once relatively common across sub-Saharan Africa, their populations have declined significantly in recent decades due to habitat loss, hunting, and poaching. As of 2021, giraffes are classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, with fewer than 100,000 individuals remaining in the wild. Conservation efforts are underway to protect giraffes and their habitats, including measures to combat poaching and habitat loss.
