Proposition 215, also known as the Compassionate Use Act of 1996, is a California ballot initiative that was passed by California voters in 1996. The measure allows patients with a recommendation from a licensed physician to use medical marijuana for the treatment of serious medical conditions, including cancer, anorexia, AIDS, chronic pain, spasticity, glaucoma, arthritis, migraines, or any other illness for which medical marijuana provides relief.
Prop 215 has been a landmark law for medical marijuana in the United States, as it was one of the first laws to allow for the use of medical marijuana. Since its passage, several other states have enacted similar laws, and there has been a growing movement towards the legalization of medical and recreational marijuana in the United States.
However, the law has faced challenges and controversies over the years, with some law enforcement officials and anti-drug organizations opposing it. Despite these challenges, Prop 215 has remained in place and has been seen as a step towards a more sensible and compassionate approach to medical marijuana and drug policy.
