The 1997 Baja 1000 was the 30th running of the annual off-road race that takes place on the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico. The Baja 1000 is one of the most challenging and prestigious off-road races in the world, covering over 1,000 miles of rugged desert terrain.

The 1997 race featured a number of notable competitors and vehicles, including the legendary off-road racer Ivan "Ironman" Stewart, who was driving a Toyota truck. Other notable competitors included Larry Ragland, Robby Gordon, and Mark McMillin.

The race started and finished in Ensenada, Mexico, and covered a variety of terrains, including rocky mountains, sandy beaches, and rough desert terrain. The course was marked with checkpoints that racers had to pass through to ensure they stayed on the correct course.

In the end, Ivan Stewart and his co-drivers, Tim and Larry Herbst, emerged as the winners of the 1997 Baja 1000, completing the race in just over 20 hours. Their Toyota truck was the first four-wheel vehicle to cross the finish line. The victory was Stewart's seventh in the Baja 1000, cementing his status as one of the greatest off-road racers of all time.
