The 1996 Summer Olympics, also known as the Games of the XXVI Olympiad, were held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA from July 19 to August 4, 1996. The event was the centennial celebration of the modern Olympic Games, which were first held in Athens, Greece in 1896.
A total of 10,318 athletes from 197 countries participated in the 1996 Olympics, competing in 271 events across 26 sports. The United States topped the medal table, winning 44 gold, 32 silver, and 25 bronze medals, followed by Russia and Germany.
The 1996 Olympics were notable for a number of reasons, including the debut of women's soccer and beach volleyball as Olympic sports, as well as the first appearance of professional basketball players in the Olympic Games. The Games were also marred by tragedy, as a bombing at Centennial Olympic Park during the games killed two people and injured over 100 others.
Despite the tragic event, the 1996 Olympics were considered a success and left a lasting impact on the city of Atlanta, which used the event as a catalyst for urban redevelopment and economic growth.
